Want Google’s own Guide to SEO? After 2 years they have finally come out with a new 32 page PDF “starter guide”. Surf here to get your own copy. The guide is fairly comprehensive and pretty much everyone should have a copy by their desk. You heard me, everyone.
Why? Do me a favor. I’ll pay you $1,000 to send some roses to my Aunt Samantha. You interested? Cool. Everyone is a witness so you get a couple of roses out to her and the $1000 is all yours. What? You want to know who she is and where she lives? She doesn’t have an address. Is that going to be a problem? Just ask around, someone might have heard about her… You with me yet? SEO is about being on the map! Having a “place” AND being able to be “found” easily & ideally for free…
Forget the TLA, SEO doesn’t mean Search Engine Optimization it means being found. SEO means getting yourself and/or your business out into the world so that the people who you want to be able to find you can. Understanding something about what SEO is and how it works is critical for success.
Take a glance at Google’s Table of Contents to the right. How many of these things do you understand? It is not enough that you “think” your Web Developer or Nephew understands them. You need to take a few minutes and walk through Google’s guide.
Why? Do you go into the back of the butcher shop to see how they chop the chicken? Probably not… So why am I asking you to go behind the back of SEO? Because I see too many people who turn their SEO efforts over to agencies on blind faith or hope. They have no real idea what the “expert” is doing and are praying for the best. Bad move. You cannot outsource something that you do not have some basic understanding of!
Do yourself a favor, read through the guide! I swear it will not hurt for long. You can use the guide as talking point to hire and then evaluate SEO services or you can try to roll your own for a bit. Read my Blog post about the Top 5 things you need to know about SEO here. Here’s my free advise; do yourself a favor, call me once you are done. I’ll chat with you for free for a couple of hours. At the end of the chat you may feel elated! You got it, understand it, and are doing a good job. Or, I may advise you do something different. We will not know until we chat. Since SEO is the single biggest success factor to doing business today it will be worth it to you and you’ll have a benchmark to measure your efforts against.
BTW, only certain types of business SEO projects do I take on. The others go to highly vetted, best in class organizations that I’ll personally stand behind.
